The 'trend' that is troubling the US

Jarvis says the most important thing to do if you feel like someone you know is contemplating ending their life is to talk to them.

The findings were released days after the deaths of famed designer Kate Spade and celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain brought the issue of suicide to the fore.

Suicide is on the rise across the US, claiming the lives of almost 45,000 Americans age 10 or older in 2016, according to new data from the CDC.

Middle-age adults had the highest increase.

The report called for every society sector - government, public health, healthcare, employers, education, media and community organizations - to cooperate in addressing the factors related to suicide.

Rural states, she explained, are still recovering from economic downturns and residents tend to be more isolated, without access to proper care. Those who misuse opioids on a weekly basis attempt suicide at a rate of 200 percent more than others. Among middle-age people across the country, marriage rates have declined, and social isolation has increased.

"We know this is about an illness and as people get sicker and sicker and close to suicide, they can't communicate to everyone very logically, very clearly - 'here's the step I'm going to take at this time and in this way, '" said Reidenberg.

"Suicide is more than a mental health issue", Dr. Anne Schuchat, principal deputy director of the CDC, told reporters on Thursday.

The Zverevs could have been just the third pair of brothers to reach the round of 16 at the same major in the 50-year Open era. Fabio Fognini beat Kyle Edmund 6-3, 4-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, while Maximilian Marterer won 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 against Jurgen Zopp .

CDC is very good about aggressive over-diagnosis in some areas, e-cigarettes and pre-diabetes are prominent examples where they defied the science consensus to embrace the precautionary principle, so it is inconsistent to be urging caution about the role of mental health in suicides. In more than half of all deaths in 27 states, the people had no known mental health condition when they ended their lives.

The dramatic rise in opioid addiction also can't be overlooked, experts say, though untangling accidental from intentional deaths by overdose can be hard. The World Health Organization estimates a global suicide rate of one death every 40 seconds, which by 2020 they predict will increase to one every 20 seconds. Suicide rates were higher among males in Maryland, ranging from about 17 to 18 per 100,000 males.

Previous CDC reports have found rate increases of 80 percent among white, middle-age women since 1999, and of 89 percent among Native Americans.

Rates of increase varied.

Between 2007 to 2012, there were dramatic cuts to mental health funding.

In Missouri, the state has also struggled with funding for suicide prevention.
