Korean leaders meet to salvage Trump-Kim summit

Trump's hysterical approach to policy, both foreign and domestic, led him to cancel the meeting with North Korea 24 hours before the supposed rescheduling, citing the North's "tremendous anger and open hostility" while threatening them with the nuclear might of the U.S. The North had also threatened to withdraw from the summit due to the military exercises taking place between the U.S. and South Korea.

Koh Yu-hwan, am expert on Korean relations at Dongguk University, said Saturday's meeting between Moon and Kim increased the likelihood of the Singapore summit taking place as originally intended.

Pompeo a year ago assembled a working group at the Central Intelligence Agency called the Korea Mission Center, which gradually assumed the lead role in talks with the North Koreans, and the group's director, a retired senior Central Intelligence Agency official with deep experience in the region, became the main USA interlocutor with Pyongyang.

Moon and Kim held talks at the truce village inside the Demilitarized Zone from 3 p.m.to 5 p.m. and "candidly" discussed ways to implement the declaration that emerged from their historic first meeting on April 27, and how to have a "successful" North Korea-U.S. summit, South Korea's presidential office said.

The two leaders also met again for two days in the northeastern Chinese city of Dalian earlier this month, just about a month before the scheduled Washington-Pyongyang summit. Kim Jong Un's comments published by the newspaper did not include any mention of his potential meeting with Trump.

"We would like to make known to the USA side once again that we have the intent to sit with the USA side to solve problem regardless of ways at any time".

South Korean presidential spokesman Yoon Young-chan said Moon will reveal the outcome of his surprise meeting with Kim on Sunday.

The meeeting between Moon and Kim took place in a grand building on the North Korean side of Panmunjom, a surreal and heavily fortified village that lies between the two countries and marks the spot where the armistice ending the Korean War in 1953 was signed.

Trump eventually pulled the plug on talks in a personal letter to Kim on Thursday.

An advance team goes out ahead of all scheduled presidential teams. "We'd like to do it", Trump told reporters at the White House. Ahead of their first summit last month, Kim and Moon established a hotline that they said would enable direct communication between the leaders and would be valuable to defuse crises, but it was unclear whether it was used to set up the latest meeting. He said Pyongyang was willing "to sit face to face at any time".

"We even inwardly hoped that what is called "Trump formula" would help clear both sides of their worries and comply with the requirements of our side and would be a wise way of substantial effect for settling the issue", he said. At that meeting, they declared they would work towards a nuclear-free Korean peninsula and a formal end to the 1950-53 Korean War.

It also was unhappy about the North's failure to allow global observers to verify the dismantling of the Punggye-ri test site, the staging ground for all six of its nuclear tests.

Trump's latest about-face sent officials scrambling in Washington.

But the whiplash from the White House was unusual even for the chaos-loving president.

The White House did not respond to a request for comment.

"He wants to get something that's a long-lasting and an actual real solution".
