It represents the next step in BMW's electric-car strategy, which sees BMW complementing today's i3 and i8 with a range of fully electric versions of its core models.

BMW plans to begin producing the iX3 in 2020 at its joint-venture plant in Shenyang, according to joint-venture partner Brilliance China Automotive Holdings Ltd.

The new model will be fitted with eDrive technology which groups together an electric motor, transmission and power electronics within a new, separate electric drive component.

BMW says that future vehicles will be developed with electric power in mind from the outset, and that its architecture will cater for front, rear and all-wheel-drive layouts. Instead of having to plug the car's cord into a wall socket, the user-friendly system employs an inductive charging station installed in the customer's garage, with charging initiated as soon as the vehicle is driven over the pad. And so a Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) once again blazes a trail for a new and groudbreaking form of BMW's fabled driving pleasure.

Another feature of the high-voltage battery developed for the fifth generation of eDrive technology is its optimised charging capability.

According to BMW, the energy storage system has a newly developed Charging Control Unit, and is created to be hooked up to fast-charging stations generating up to 150 kW. BMW says that when the EV is charged with a fast-charging station providing 150 kW the battery pack can charge fully in 30 minutes.

Electric mobility also means a differentiation in design.

The brand's iconic kidney grille is in place, but it is closed off to improve aerodynamic efficiency and is highlighted in blue, while the rear diffuser is smoothed over with the lack of an exhaust. That grille is subtly reshaped to give it a bit more of a distinctive flavour, with a strong touch of the styling of that i Vision Dynamics concept. The signature looks of BMW i cars will also mark out future models from the brand.
