Hub territory in blizzard warning Saturday

Current weather predicts blizzard conditions in much of northwest Kansas today through Saturday.

A blizzard warning is in effect for northeast Nebraska thru 7 this evening. Rollo Ward, 61, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, was killed after losing control of his eastbound semitrailer, entering the median and crashing into an already stranded semi on near Chappell, according to the Nebraska State Patrol.

If you stay home, it is a good idea to make sure your home emergency kit is well-stocked, too, due to the possibility of power failures.

Nebraska officials have closed several roads - including a 200 mile stretch of Interstate 80 - in western Nebraska as a late-season blizzard sweeps the region. There was also a total of 230 vehicle spinouts, or vehicles that went off the road. "The rescued motorists were taken to Light Memorial Presbyterian Church in Sidney or to a hotel of their choice".

The Kansas Division of Emergency Management says travel is expected to be risky and at times impossible for much of northwest Kansas.

Because of winter weather conditions, the Kansas Department of Transportation closed K-27 from the US 36 junction to the Nebraska state line, and USA 36 from St. Francis to the Colorado state line.

In north central Nebraska, there were thunderstorms and a chance for hail.

The town of Newport in Rock County had seen 14 inches of snowfall as of 8 a.m. Saturday, and more was falling. Meanwhile along the Front Range, expect rain and snow showers to move into the area by the midday hours on Friday as temperatures crash back into the 40s.

Those high winds will combine with the intensifying snow starting around Akron for blizzard conditions that will make travel hard, if not impossible, for much of the day. By midday, poor visibility due to blowing and drifting snow had shut down USA 24 between Calhan and Limon, as well as major roads across the state, including Interstate 70 between Limon and the Kansas line.

The story of the day will be high winds, with gusts up to 50 m.p.h. east of I-25 in Denver and up to 65 m.p.h. on the Eastern Plains.
