Rivalry is back: Sox, Yankees duke it out

If this season does indeed play out as an extended grudge match between the Red Sox and Yankees for supremacy atop the American League East and beyond, circle Wednesday night as the first real flash point. After the field cleared, the players resumed, and the Yankees won in a 10-7 victory. Austin received a five-game suspension and was fined an undisclosed amount for charging the mound and fighting.

Trying to hit Kelly, Austin instead tagged Red Sox third base coach Carlos Febles. Austin and Kelly were both ejected for their respective roles in the fracas, and the bad blood has ample opportunity to spill over against with 17 games remaining this season between the two clubs.

Red Sox catcher Christian Vázquez ran behind Austin and tried to grab him.

Vazquez was behind the plate when Tyler Austin charged Joe Kelly, peeved after the Red Sox reliever drilled him in the back.

Judge, who ended up getting Kelly in a headlock, said his sole intention was to get the pitcher away from the scuffle in order to diffuse the situation. I don't think I'll be the person they go after.

Kelly had red marks around his neck after the skirmish and left the field with a torn jersey.
