Huge crowds gather for rally against gun violence in Washington DC

More than 800 events were scheduled to take place around the world Saturday, according to March for Our Lives organizers.

Amnesty International USA will have member and staff-led delegations in 14 cities around the country as part of the March for Our Lives event this Saturday, March 24.

Another national walkout, organized by a different group of students, is planned for April 20, the 19th anniversary of the 1999 attack at Colorado's Columbine High School that killed 12 students and a teacher and left two dozen more injured. "I can only call a lawmaker so many times a day", she said.

She said: "After our own school shooting at Dunblane, new gun ownership laws were introduced in Britain and that's exactly what's needed in the United States, where gun deaths are a national tragedy".

Tallulah Lefkowitz, a Petaluma High School junior, said it is "becoming increasingly apparent that we must fight for ourselves".

'Anybody who's in high school right now has been growing up on school violence, he said.

"To see their kids really put into action their free speech that is inspired by their faith, and that it's their church that is encouraging them to go out, that's what we're trying to highlight", he said.

The school shooting in Parkland, Florida, earlier this year, and subsequent news coverage have sparked, and highlighted, student activism around the country to address gun violence. And I know that none of us want our home to feel like a war zone.

Gun-rights groups like the National Rifle Association say they support tighter security around schools and other public places as well as measures to disarm the mentally disturbed and risky.

From Washington, DC to San Francisco, from London to Tel Aviv, Americans marched not only for the lives lost in Parkland, Florida, but also the 58 lives cut short in Las Vegas.

Before the march, a choir made up of students from various schools in the region performed on stage at Coolidge Park.

In Boston, a group of about 25 counter-protesters gathered in front of the gold-domed MA statehouse to decry calls for tougher gun laws.

"We can't ignore the issues of gun control that this tragedy raises".

The local March for Our Lives will take place on Main Street starting at 10 a.m. Participants will gather at the First Congregational Church, 73 S. Palouse St., before setting out.
