Fortnite Coming to Mobile Devices, iOS Beta Next Week

Sony has in the past blocked cross-play gaming between the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on titles such as Minecraft and Rocket League.

Fortnite allows PS4 players to play with folks on PC, Mac, and the upcoming mobile version of the game.

Microsoft has essentially been sending an open invitation to Sony for cross-play capabilities.

"Microsoft has always been a leading voice in encouraging the adoption of cross-platform play and the potential of connecting players across PC, mobile and all consoles", Microsoft told Kotaku. Microsoft is the first company that has been touting cross-platform play, specifically between its own Xbox and Windows 10 platforms, and more recently, the Nintendo Switch. And since the PS4 is now outselling Xbox One, disabling the function will only help sustain the present sales figures.

Not only will Fortnite Mobile be launching on iOS and Android, but it will also boast cross-play and shared progression across linked accounts. Spencer said at the time that he "would have liked to see them leave it on". The PS4 is ahead of Xbox One in sales, and enabling cross-play would mean that friends would not necessarily have to choose between the consoles if they can play games against each other on any console, notes The Verge.

While announcing the mobile version, Epic talked of its vision for the game, saying, "We believe this is the future of games". The company then suggested that the gaming outlet reach out to Sony or Epic for more. As both the consoles work on similar control schemes, there would be no balance issues, which is usually seen with mobile and PC. The same game on all platforms.

Same gameplay, same map, same content, same weekly updates. Epic Games opened its sign-up page for mobile devices on Monday, and the site went down nearly immediately because of all the extra traffic. At this point, the full iOS support plans for Fortnite Battle Royale are unclear but judging by the gameplay trailer for that game, the new iPhone X is the lead platform, which on face value could at least dissuade some gamers on older iOS from learning more about it.
