Big 12 Tournament Central

The Horned Frogs led during most of the game Thursday in Kansas City at the Big 12 Tournament against Kansas State, but TCU's woes from the free throw hampered the team in its 66-64 overtime loss. Offensively, Kansas State has been led by Dean Wade (16.7 ppg, 6.4 rpg, 2.8 apg, 1.5 spg), Barry Brown (16.6 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 3.5 apg, 1.9 spg), Xavier Sneed (10.7 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 1.7 apg, 1.5 spg), and Kamau Stokes (9.7 ppg, 2.2 rpg, 3.7 apg, 1.1 spg). With a loss to Oklahoma State in the first round of the Big 12 tournament giving the Sooners an early exit, Oklahoma remains on the bubble with their fate in the hands of the selection committee. They've won the crown three times in that span. Azubuike leads in rebounds with 7.1 while Graham tops in assists with 7.2.

"We won at Kansas, at West Virginia and at Iowa State, and I'm not sure the last time anybody in our league did that in one year", Boynton said.

The Horned Frogs were celebrating new life when Desmond Bane's 3-pointer beat the buzzer to force overtime against Kansas State in Thursday's quarterfinals.

Brown returned to the bench after being treated in the locker room, but did not return to the game. Obviously that took the wind out of their sails. We have a great group. "Going forward into next week", Weber said, "we have every indication he will be able to play".

"If you just look at our team, watch us play".

The Jayhawks were somber for a couple of reasons.

Will Bynum's layup in the final moments of that game eliminated the Cowboys after John Lucas' 3-pointer with 26.3 seconds left tied the game.

"We took our foot off the gas and relaxed".

"Any foul in the game is not. you don't want any foul", Coach K said.

Ichiro To Sign With Seattle Mariners
After three years in NY and three with the Miami Marlins , Ichiro received a buyout when Miami did not pick up his option. Another returning outfielder, Guillermo Heredia , is coming off shoulder surgery and is being worked in slowly.

Also, the Jayhawks - who received good inside production from Silvio De Sousa (11 boards, eight points) and Mitch Lightfoot (eight points, three boards) and who were trying to make up for the absence of the injured Udoka Azubuike for the second straight game - were nonetheless burned inside by K-State forward Makol Mawien.

Double-doubles from Devonte' Graham and Malik Newman, along with some stingy zone defense, propelled the No. 7/7 Kansas Jayhawks past Kansas State, 70-56, January 29 inside Bramlage Coliseum in the 288th edition of the Dillons Sunflower Showdown. "Next man up is our mentality. He kept saying, 'Put me in.' But I held up fingers and asked him how many and he couldn't say". "So I think those are the things that stand out. We can do better". I would predict that their chances are 50/50 at best.

K-State players celebrated wildly when it was final. Graham collected his third double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 assists, while Newman joined his senior teammates in double-double territory for the first time in his career, netting 13 points and pulling down a career-high 10 rebounds.

He finished with 11 points and five rebounds, so it wasn't one of his best games.

Kansas guard Malik Newman (14) pulls up for a jumper during the second half, Friday, .

"Marcus shoots an airball, but does something right away to make up for it", Self said, impressed at Garrett's quick steal. "I got to respect them".

"You know, so much has happened this year - so much success and so much media scrutiny - that it's going to be a tough decision", Rayford Young told The Associated Press.

"It just didn't go our way", Robinson said.
