PS4 update 5.50 adds a host of new features

The silent but deadly system software update is packing some pretty powerful features, including a whole host of parental control options that should come in handy as the console covets a more casual audience.

Except for the supersampling, everything else is also available on the base PS4 console.

Sony has officially released PS4 firmware update 5.50. Parents/Guardians can also manage play time via their smartphone or computer as well as specify whether or not to automatically log the child out of the PS4 once their time is up. Once a child is close to the time limit, a notification will pop up which should give the child enough time to save their game or finish that last boss. Players can also easily locate games that can be played on PlayStation VR. This tab will show you only the games from the free giveaway that takes place every month. Because you can only play those games if you have an active PS Plus subscription, a PS Plus icon appears with a lock on top of it next to the games if your subscription has expired.

As requested, we're adding a function that will allow you to hide certain applications under the "Purchased" tab in the Library. To download the update, turn on your PS4 and make sure you're connected to the internet.

The Quick Menu has received a slight modification in the 5.50 update as well. If you're using Spotify on PlayStation Music, the "square" button will serve as the shortcut for volume control.
