Blast Hits Mosque in Benghazi, Libya, Casualties Reported

The bomb blast, which took place during the Friday prayers, is suspected to have been triggered by Improvised Explosive Device, IED, at the Saad Ben Obadah in Libya.

A twin bombing attack in a mosque claimed the lives of two people and 55 other injured. Twin auto bomb attacks hit a mosque in Benghazi's Salmani district two weeks ago, killing 34 people and injuring more than 100 others.

He said according to preliminary investigations, the bombing was carried out remotely.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

The blasts follow twin auto bombings outside a mosque in Benghazi after prayers on January 24 that left almost 40 people dead.

Jihadists and the forces of general Khalifa Haftar have been fighting to gain control of the city for over three years before Haftar announced that his troops has retaken it last July.

Haftar began his military campaign in response to continuous bombings and assassinations by on Islamist militants in Benghazi in May 2014.

Libya has been plagued by unrest and political division since the uprising that toppled its former leader Muammar Gaddafi's regime in 2011.

In the past few months there have been occasional, smaller scale bombings apparently targeting LNA allies or supporters.

The United Nations has been trying to mediate for years, hoping elections can help stabilize Libya. The country has been since split between rival governments and militias.

"Turkey attaches importance for peace, security and stability to prevail in Libya and supports Libya's efforts against terrorist groups seeking to drive the country towards chaos", it added.
