Tariq Ramadan: French police question Muslim scholar over rape claims

He is the grandson of Hassan al-Banna, who founded the Muslim Brotherhood. The Paris judicial office has confirmed that two separate lawsuits were filed against Ramadan.

Since November 2017, Ramadan has been on a leave of absence from Oxford University to contest allegations of rape and sexual misconduct.

In retaliation, Ramadan has filed a case of defamation against the woman, with his lawyer saying the professor "categorically rejects all these false allegations".

She alleges that Ramadan violently assaulted her in a Paris hotel room in 2012 following one of his lectures. "He kissed me really hard... then for a few seconds he choked me, I really thought I was going to die". I had a great admiration for him for years.

An unnamed disabled woman also accused the academic of raping her in a hotel room in the southeastern city of Lyon in 2009.

The allegations against Ramadan emerged in the aftermath of similar accusations made against Hollywood film producer Harvey Weinstein, which emboldened dozens of women to come forward their own with stories of sexual harassment and assault.

The senior research fellow of St. Antony's College was accused in November of rape by French author Henda Ayari.
