Tiger Woods is back on PGA duty but suffers shakey start

On Thursday at the Farmers Insurance Open, after not having played an official PGA Tour round in 52 weeks, Woods almost aced the 223-yard, par-3 16th hole at Torrey Pines on the South Course.

Woods, Patrick Reed and Charley Hoffman tee off at 12:30 p.m.

Follow along with the highlights from his round below.

This will be only his second PGA Tour event since August 2015.

Takes an unplayable. Third shot with 5-iron finds more trouble left.

Woods was back over par in disappointing circumstances at the par-five 13th, lipping out from five feet after a magnificent shot from the bunker which had deserved to salvage a scratchy par. The shot landed near the hole, bounced toward the pin and rolled past, and stopped about six inches shy of being an ace. Slides birdie putt off right edge. Tony Finau leads the tournament at 7-under-par. But he made amends at the 16th, rifling a six-iron to eight inches. You don't need to hit long putts with shots like that.

He played the par 5s in even par, and didn't give himself any other birdie chances inside 15 feet.

Tiger Woods is plodding through a frustrating PGA Tour season debut in the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.

Winter storm to create hard to unsafe travel Sund — ALERT
This precipitation will likely change from rain to wintry mix and snow, with some areas changing over quicker than others. This means there is the potential for hazardous to risky travel along with threat to life if precautions are not taken.

The tee shot on this one was of the variety that the tee is in the pocket before the ball reaches its apex. Another par, another missed opportunity on a par-5 hole.

Back on form from the tee, finds the fairway with a big three-wood. He was one rotation away from making a long eagle putt on the par-5 sixth. He visited bunkers often, and often from fairways. Not a good bogey as he heads back to 1-over on the day.

A victor of 79 PGA Tour events, Woods had an 11-year stretch at this tournament during which he did not finish worse than 10th and had six victories. You've got to swing a little bit smoother and make sure you get that center contact. A very Hiedki-an move. Muscular approach from rough comes up just short of green.

That's traditionally been a much easier layout than the South, which hosts U.S. Opens, but the disparity between the two may be closing thanks to a Tom Weiskopf redesign.

"It felt good, looked good, and then we were listening for some noise", Woods said of the near miss.

Phil Mickelson, also of Rancho Santa Fe, starts Friday at 10:40 a.m. on the South Course after carding a 70 on the North Course. He hit that low cut that went miles.

From 132-yards, Woods hit a masterful wedge shot right over the pin and nearly holed out as it hopped backward, settling just outside a foot from the cup. The amateurs get out here and they start hitting harder and harder, but that's not the key. I thought he looked pretty good, especially for coming back to a place like this. 9-iron from 148 yards finds greenside bunker. From there he found the right greenside bunker, and was unable to get his 12-foot par putt to drop. Woods goes out in 37 (1-over).
