Survey suggests loot boxes are here to stay


The Game Developers Conference (GDC) has published a report with results of a survey nearly 4,000 game developers took part in, which shows some interesting developments in the game industry.

"Significant trends revealed by the survey results include a notable uptick in interest in the Nintendo Switch, game makers' waning opinions of VR, and a move away from mobile to focus on PC and home consoles". "With that in mind we asked developers which platforms (if any) interest them most right now, and "PC" proved the most popular answer with 59 percent - followed by PlayStation 4/4 Pro (39 percent) and, close behind it, Nintendo Switch (36 percent)", the survey results add. 15 percent of devs expect their next game to be for the Switch.

Almost 4,000 polled developers say that have an interest in the Switch.

In terms of sales, the GDC 2018 survey showed that 28% of third-party developers indicated that their games sold better on Switch; 23% said that their sales were average and 16% reported that they were below the expectation. Whether or not that enthusiasm will hold up in the coming years remains to be seen, but developers can sense the excitement (and many are excited about the console themselves).

Not too late for flu shots
Jernigan offered USA Today a bit of a hope, though, as he said this year's flu season was "probably peaking" last week. Flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by a virus. "We have a mixed bag of viruses out there", Brammer said.

Despite the controversy surrounding loot crates, 11 percent of respondents, or about one in 10 developers, are working on a game with a monetization strategy that uses loot boxes.

Meanwhile, things look less rosy for virtual reality. However, when asked which platform their next game would appear on, the number dips slightly to 17 per cent, suggesting a slight decrease in confidence that the technology is catching on among players. Another said "VR adoption and uptake depends on finding that killer game that becomes a must have", suggesting that the headset-based hardware needs a game comparable to Halo or Minecraft to help it achieve mainstream adoption.

That's up from 3% in 2017 and there were even more positive results noted from among developers looking to the future.
