Seahawks bring back Norton Jr. as new defensive coordinator


Ken Norton Jr.'s return to the 49ers didn't last long.

The 49ers announced on January 8 they had hired Norton, 51, and given him the title of "assistant head coach; defense/inside linebackers". There was a belief Seattle was trying to bring back Gus Bradley, but the former Seahawks defensive coordinator opted to remain with the Los Angeles Chargers.

"Last week, Ken was presented with an opportunity to once again coordinate a defense", said a statement from 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan. "Because of how we feel about Ken as a coach, we understand and respect his desire to pursue the position", Shanahan said. Norton was the Seahawks' Linebackers Coach from 2010-2014 before leaving to take over as the Raiders' Defensive Coordinator in 2015. Wright. From 2012-2014, Norton was part of a defensive staff that helped the Seahawks lead the National Football League in scoring defense each of those seasons and in total defense in 2013 and 2014. Before joining San Francisco as a free agent, Norton Jr. played for the Dallas Cowboys, who drafted him in the second round out of UCLA in 1988. Seattle recently parted with defensive coordinator Kris Richard while also overhauling most of the offensive staff. He served in that role for the past two seasons with the after a stint as the ' assistant offensive line coach in 2015.

Garafolo also reported that the Seahawks are hiring Mike Solari as offensive line coach to replace Tom Cable, which a source later confirmed to the Seattle Times.

Before coming to the Giants, Solari was the offensive line coach for the San Francisco 49ers and the assistant offensive line coach for the Green Bay Packers.

Solari, 63, served as offensive line coach in Seattle in 2008 and 2009.

The financial details of the contract are unknown as of the moment, but Norton's deal with Seattle is a surprise twist to the 51-year-old former linebacker's intriguing offseason.
