Ford commits $11bn to cleaning up cars by 2022


Ford Motor Co decided that they will significantly increase their planned investments in electric vehicles to $11bn by 2022 and have 40 hybrid and fully electric vehicles in its model line-up.

The new hybrid range will be part of Ford's global electrification strategy, which will see "13 new global electrified vehicles" come ton market in the next five years.

"We're all in on this and we're taking our mainstream vehicles, our most iconic vehicles, and we're electrifying them", Ford told reporters.

At the same time as announcing the Mach1, Ford also confirmed it had doubled its investment in electric vehicles to $11 billion (approx £8 billion) up to 2022. The company now offers just one fully electric vehicle.

Ford believed that the answer would be positive.

In a report via the BBC, Ford has announced plans for a major expansion in the electric auto industry.

With reduced battery costs and increased regulatory requirements worldwide for internal combustion engines, the vehicle manufacturers are stepping up their investments on wholly electric models.

Stephanie Brinley, a senior automotive analyst at HIS Markit, said it was a sensible move by Ford. Over the next four years, the company plans to invest over £8bn into electric vehicle development.

"We're starting to telegraph where we're going to play in the electrified business around the world", he said.

From the total 40 models, 16 are planned to be fully electric and the rest plug-in hybrids.

Ford's original plan was to launch an all-electric SUV in 2020, but in order to stand out on the market and create something unique the brand has changed tact and made a decision to launch it as a performance model.
