Delta IV Rocket Launch at Vandenberg Air Force Base called off Thursday

Orbital ATK produced the solid rocket motors at its facilities in Magna and Clearfield, Utah, where it has manufactured GEM-60s for the Delta IV launch vehicle since the initial flight in 2002. This flight marked the first of 2018 for ULA. Will Crawford, ULA's NRO program manager, said, "As the nation's most trustworthy launch provider, today's launch exemplifies ULA's ongoing commitment to 100 percent mission success".

Manchester based company Starchaser has successfully launched a research rocket and now aims to rocket tourists into space by 2022. He also thanked the entire ULA team as well as the mission partners at the NRO and also the U.S. Airforce for making the 27th NRO launch a successful one. NROL-47 is NRO's 50th launch since 1996.

While details about the payload are classified, groups of amateur satellite trackers can use clues to narrow down the nature of the satellite, including its likely orbit and technology.

The recent launch of the Delta 4 rocket into orbit came days after SpaceX's launch of another secretive satellite codenamed Zuma.

Consuming almost 2,000 pounds of liquid propellant per second, the 220-foot-tall rocket rapidly accelerated as it climbed out of the thick lower atmosphere, discarding the strap-ons about one minute and 40 seconds after liftoff. "The forecast shows a 90% chance of favourable weather conditions for launch".

A rocket carrying a spy satellite launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base Friday afternoon after being delayed a day due to technical issues.

The launch of the new classified reconnaissance satellite has been much anticipated - as it has been delayed several times.

The mission was due to take place at Space Launch Complex-6 - around 140 miles from downtown Los Angeles in California.

There are three variants of Delta IV M+ configuration. But this time, it has used the two-stage, 217-foot-tall (66 m) Delta IV rocket.
