'Raising Iran unrest at United Nations a blunder'

At the forefront of resistance to the Islamist mullahs' bloody crackdown on pro-democratic protesters are U.S. Ambassador to U.N. Nikki Haley and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin.

Other pro-government demonstrations were held in Shahin Dezh, in West Azarbaijan province bordering Turkey; the city of Semnan, in the northern Semnan Province; and Shadegan, in the southern Khouzestan Province near Iraq. They are on the streets because of the torturous pressure of unemployment and rising prices caused by the United States-led sanctions.

Demonstrations were quickly backed by Iran's main global detractors: the U.S., Israel.

Similarly, hundreds of people crowded in front of the Iranian embassy in France to show solidarity with the uprising in Iran.

Thousands of government supporters staged rallies in Iran for a fourth day on Saturday, in a backlash against widespread protests that the clerical establishment has blamed on the country's enemies.

Some of those detained, he said, had not participated in protests and for unclear reasons were arrested at home.

U.S. President Donald Trump has fiercely opposed the deal, but the other signatories remain firmly behind it.

The U.S. called Friday's meeting after giving moral support to the anti-government protesters in a week of demonstrations and counter-demonstrations.

Other members of the Security Council particularly Russia has shown different reactions to the U.S. demand to an extent that Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova while referring to the way the United States deal with protest gatherings in other parts of the world said perhaps the USA envoy to the United Nations (Nikki Haley) has some interesting things to say about suppression of popular protests in Ferguson and Wall Street.

Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya, left, speaks to American Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley before the security council meeting.

He discussed the cancellation of the visit of the french foreign minister to Tehran during the previous week and said "this is unacceptable that a country has the largest number of economic agreements with Iran on paper, but adopts political and security policies that are totally against our country".

The statement, backed by other nations, carry an implicit criticism of the US for refusing to acknowledge the Security Council's main responsibility which is maintaining global peace and security.
