Packers promote Brian Gutekunst as new general manager

Share and others are reporting that the 44-year-old Gutekunst will receive a five-year contract to replace longtime Green Bay GM Ted Thompson, who was moved to another position with the organization last week.

Gutekunst spent the last two seasons as the director of player personnel after spending 17 seasons in the team's scouting department. The Packers named Gutekunst the GM before another team could do it first.

The Houston Chronicle first reported Sunday that Gutekunst had taken the job.

The Packers had several strong in-house candidates including Gutekunst.

Green Bay's decision comes less than 24 hours after the Seattle Seahawks declined their request to interview GM John Schneider for the same position.

Green Bay (7-9) finished with a losing record and out of the playoffs for the first time since 2008. Thanks to a broken collarbone, Rodgers only appeared in seven games this season. In addition to Gutekunst's promotion, another familiar face, Joe Philbin, is reportedly returning for a second stint under coach Mike McCarthy after serving as offensive coordinator from 2007-2011. On defense, veteran coordinator Dom Capers was sacked after a season in which the unit failed to generate consistent pass rush and had to rely on inexperienced players at cornerback because of injuries and turnover.
