McCain to Miss Pivotal Senate Tax Vote After Chemotherapy Complications

They report that McCain is returning to Arizona to spend the holidays with his family after spending several days in a Maryland hospital recovering from chemotherapy treatment for his brain cancer.

President Donald Trump on Friday telephoned Cindy McCain, the wife of ailing Sen.

'Thank you to everyone for their kind words, ' she wrote.

McCain, an 81-year-old former prisoner of war and 2008 Republican presidential nominee was diagnosed in July with a brain tumor known as a glioblastoma, after doctors found a blood clot over his left eye during a routine checkup. But he said he's "encouraged that John's going to be back in January and be good to go".

"They've headed back, but I understand he'll come if we ever needed his help, which hopefully we won't", Trump said.

The passage of the tax bill, however, does not hinge on McCain's support because the GOP has a 52-48 vote advantage in the Senate.

McCain received treatment at Walter Reed Medical Center last week for a viral infection, Dr. Mark Gilbert said in a statement on Sunday, adding that McCain is "responding positively" to his cancer treatment. "He looks forward to returning to Washington in January".

His daughter Meghan McCain tweeted Sunday: "My father is doing well and we are all looking forward to spending Christmas together in Arizona".

The House and Senate are scheduled to vote this week on Trump's top legislative accomplishment, a sweeping tax package.

But McCain's condition has appeared to worsen in recent weeks.

His daughter, Meghan McCain, timed her November 21 wedding at the family cabin in Cornville, near Sedona, so that McCain could participate and give away the bride.

As a result, McCain will not be in Washington to vote on the GOP's tax bill vote, which is expected to take place early in the week.

'The truth is that, as anyone knows whose family has battled cancer or any significant disease, that oftentimes there are side effects to treatment that you have, ' Domenech explained when talking about McCain's ailment today.
