Wilkerson clearly wants out of NY and the Jets will likely grant his wish by cutting him this offseason.
"I'm just anxious about the guys going to the game tomorrow, and I'm going to coach those 53 guys", Bowles said before repeating it several times when pushed for details.
Wilkerson was benched during the first quarter of New York's Week 13 win over the Kansas City Chiefs, and Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News later reported that a team source said, "He's gone", with regard to Wilkerson's Jets future. The Jets used the franchise tag on Wilkerson for 2016, but the sides worked out a long-term agreement minutes before the July 15 deadline last season.
"I'm just anxious about the guys I'm coaching", Bowles said, when asked the same question.
Vacchiano later reported Wilkerson was "very late" for practice on Friday, which led to the suspension.
They could also designate him as a post-June 1 cut to free up $17 million and incur a $3 million dead money charge.
'Terrorist' explosion in Manhattan injures 4; suspect named
NY officials said the Islamic State terrorist group inspired the suspect but that he did not have direct contact with the group. A short piece of metal pipe was packed with low intensity explosive material and a handful of screws meant to cause injury.
"I'm just going to worry about the guys that are going to the game playing and go from there", Bowles said. It marked the third straight year Wilkerson was benched a quarter for lateness.
Bowles is tight-lipped to a fault at times, and Friday was no different.
Demario Davis said Bowles informed the team of Wilkerson's latest punishment.
Bowles said he had a discussion with Wilkerson, who was not available for comment in the Jets locker room. "It's about the team and we've got a big challenge in front of us on Sunday (versus the Saints), and that's what we're going to be focused on".
Before last season, Wilkerson signed a five-year, $86 million extension, a contract that is looking worse every day.
NOTES: RB Matt Forte (knee) and RG Brian Winters (abdomen/ankle) were listed as questionable for the game. "Tardiness continues to be an issue for him, and it now looks likelier that the Jets will decide to part ways with him after this season". Bowles said the Jets will "probably wait" to make a decision on him.
