Ole Miss Gets Two-Year Bowl Ban, Loss of Scholarships Following Sanctions

"The panel noted that the case was the result of a culture at the university where rules violations were acceptable in the football program and reminiscent of similar Ole Miss infractions cases in the past".

The seemingly never-ending investigation by the NCAA into Ole Miss athletics is finally over - and the football program took the brunt of the penalties.

Most debilitating in that regard is an additional bowl-ban season and the loss of 13 scholarships over the next three years.

The program already self-imposed several penalties on itself, including a reduction of 11 scholarships over the course of four years, a $150,000 fine and a ban on postseason play in 2017.

On Friday, the NCAA gave Ole Miss an additional postseason ban for 2018, stripped the school of two additional scholarships, put it on probation until November 30, 2020 and forced the vacation of wins. The NCAA says six football staff members and 12 boosters contributed to the current violations.

"It is not necessary for an institution to obtain permission in writing to recruit a student-athlete at an institution that has been placed on probation with sanctions that preclude it from competing in postseason competition during the remaining seasons of the student-athlete's eligibility". That won't be easy considering the additional postseason ban for the 2018 season. The 41-year-old led the Rebels to a respectable season, including an Egg Bowl win over rival Mississippi State last week. Phone records that showed Freeze calling numbers linked to escort services with his university phone came out during that lawsuit. Matt Luke was named the permanent head coach on Sunday after serving on an interim basis throughout the 2017 season. Bjork said the appeal will be launched "right away".
