Trump lights National Christmas Tree for first time

The theme for this year is "Time-Honored Traditions", and included in that is a lovely nativity scene.

New this year are wreaths hanging from the exterior of every window.

The theme goes hand-in-hand with President Trump's belief that America needs to restore the tradition in Christmas.

"As we approach the end of the year we got to thinking, "Did Donald TrumpDonald John TrumpWarren fundraises off of Trump's "Pocahontas" jab Dem senator slams Trump's "moral authority" after 'Pocahontas" remark Bill Press: Religion flunks morality MORE really bring Christmas Back to the White House?'" said host Chris Hayes, on MSNBC's "All In with Chris Hayes", before rolling the clip.

The first lady's office previewed the decorations for journalists on Monday before welcoming students from a nearby military base in Maryland to see the decorations and try some holiday-themed arts and crafts, such as building gumdrop trees and decorating garland. "Melania Trump tweeted, "@WhiteHouse is ready to celebrate! During the presidential campaign, he complained that saying "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas" amounted to "chipping away at Christianity".

The night was a big outing for the Trump family, including the president's daughters Tiffany and Ivanka, who was with her three children and husband, Jared Kushner; as well as his son Donald Jr and his wife Vanessa. It is one that you have heard me speak about many times before.

Among the Christmas standards is an 18-foot (about 5.5-meter) fir tree in its traditional spot in the Blue Room, decorated with ornaments bearing the seals of every state and USA territory. The First Lady's Director of Communications Stephanie Grisham also sent out a tweet with the image of the hallway decorations that many are deeming eerie and spooky and better suited to Halloween than Christmas.

The White House said she personally chose every detail of the decor.

The holiday celebrating begins later Monday with a party for the volunteer decorators and will continue well into December with receptions and parties - sometimes two a day - for the next several weeks.

Other decorations, according to BusinessInsider.com include 53 Christmas trees, more than 12,000 ornaments, 18,000 feet of Christmas lights, and 71 wreaths.

At last year's ceremony, President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle feted Kelly Clarkson, Eva Longoria, Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood, Marc Anthony and Chance the Rapper.

"Glad she's understood the aesthetic of the long national nightmare we're in", one person said, while another called "that long, foreboding tunnel of darkness swallowing us up" a metaphor for the political climate.
