Snapchat's redesigned app is here and much easier to use

"To the left, there will be "Friends" page where users will see their friends" Stories and Bitmojis, as well their chats with them. While that means that Facebook as a platform is easier to abuse, it has also made Mark Zuckerberg's company immensely more profitable per user. It displays users' friends based on their communication preferences.

The update will start to roll out to a small group of users later this week.

Ironically, Spiegel's solution to "fake news" necessitates dialing back the clock to a time before social media altogether.

Snapchat has revealed a redesign that gives publishers their own area of the app, away from messages from users' friends, and empowers an algorithm to decide what media content people see.

Snap CEO Evan Spiegel slams social media – and says Snapchat isn't social media
With Snapchat's new redesign, the company is betting that users want intimacy versus popularity

Three weeks after Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel revealed that his company planned to redesign its app, a preview of that change has arrived.

As a byproduct of splitting up the friends list and the content from publishers, creators and the community, the look of the app has changed as well.

As part of the redesign, Snap will begin focusing on making the experience more rewarding for creators by offering them improved distribution and monetisation opportunities. The core idea in the new Snapchat is to put your friends on one side of the app, and brands on the other. "We believe that this balance of human review and machine personalization provides the best content experience on mobile". Everything within the app technically works but trying to navigate it has always been something of a pain.

"While blurring the lines between professional content creators and your friends has been an interesting Internet experiment, it has also produced some odd side-effects (like fake news) and made us feel like we have to perform for our friends rather than just express ourselves", Snap wrote in a blog post. Snapchat explains that if an account follows you back, it is considered a friend, and shows up on the left side of the app. "While blurring the lines between professional content creators and your friends has been an interesting internet experiment, it has also produced some odd side-effects (like fake news) and made us feel like we have to perform for our friends rather than just express ourselves".

Previously, content from friends mingled and competed with professional content in one pane on the right. For Spiegel suggests Snapchat isn't really a social media company, instead it's more of a messaging service, like texting. To that end, the updated app will still open directly to the camera interface. This is a Friends page that's more "dynamic" than before.

In addition to shuffling content and friends within the app, Snap is updating the algorithm used for Chat.

The company also reported lower-than-expected quarterly revenue of $208 million, which Spiegel attributed at the time to a shift to an automated advertising platform. Snapchat says it will release new tools next year to help publishers turn a profit, though it didn't specify its plans.
