Physical retail 'still relevant' on Black Friday


US consumers kicked off the holiday shopping season with an online frenzy, breaking spending records over Thanksgiving and on Cyber Monday.

A meager dip is good news for traditional retailers. At the same time, some analytics companies are reporting small decreases in Black Friday foot traffic. Amazon, alone, accounted for between 45 and 50 percent of all online Black Friday sales.

Cyber Monday is all about online retailers and their attempts to lure shoppers to their sites by offering awesome sales on some items in the hope that shoppers will end up spending more while they are there. XRT, and both V and MA, however, offer broad exposure to what could easily be a very happy holiday season for retailers of all stripes, and adding all four of the above to your portfolio could make it a happy one for you too.

It was not even Black Friday yet and already Americans had spent over 1.5 billion dollars online by Thanksgiving evening a 16.8 % jump over the same period a year ago. In the graph below, the blue line shows the number of those who were actively promoting Black Friday specific discounting campaigns throughout Black Friday week, while the orange line shows the number promoting discounting campaigns that were not explicitly related to Black Friday.

The United Parcel Service found in its annual survey past year that for the first time shoppers made the majority of their purchases online.
