As many as 10 members of the gang MS-13 stabbed a man more than 100 times in a Maryland park, ripped out his heart and buried him, officials say.

Officials from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement said in a statement: "Miguel Angel Lopez-Abrego, a citizen and national of El Salvador, is illegally in the US and now in immigration proceedings". The informant "further described the circumstances of the murder and detailed the choking, stabbing, decapitating, and dismembering of the victim's body before dumping it in the pre-dug hole", according to the court document.

The unidentified victim was stabbed more than 100 times by up to 10 suspects who communicated on walkie talkies while closing in on him in Wheaton, Maryland.

He was arrested in North Carolina on 11 November, extradited to Montgomery County, Maryland and is being held without bail in Rockville District Court pending a preliminary hearing scheduled for December 22. The informant said he was part of the killing and led detectives to the gravesite on September 5.

Police have not said why they believe the victim was from Annapolis, and are still working to identify him.

Gang members lured the victim to the park and spoke to each other on walkie-talkies as he arrived, the paper added. He had short, dark brown hair and was missing a bottom tooth near the front of his mouth. The victim also had a rosary with him.

Authorities said they think the man was killed in the "early spring" of this year.

Court documents obtained by ABC 7 News in Washington, D.C., reveal the brutal details of the ambush and murder allegedly carried out by an informant and nine other MS-13 members.

The victim was found wearing a gray sweatshirt with the words "First United Methodist Church Laurel" written on the left chest of the shirt with a gray hooded long-sleeve shirt underneath with black sweat trousers and blue athletic shorts underneath the number "19" printed on the left side.

Montgomery County's State's Attorney John McCarthy has said MS-13 has been implicated in up to 18 murders over the past two years in Montgomery County.
