Police have 'subject in custody' following stabbings at Mall of America

Bloomington Police Chief Jeff Potts called the incident a result of an alleged "interrupted theft", according to PEOPLE.

Officials took Mahad Abdiaziz Abdirahaman, 20, of Minneapolis into custody and charged him with two counts of first-degree assault, CBS Minnesota reports.

On Sunday evening, two men were stabbed with a knife in a Macy's dressing room. The second victim was stabbed after trying to intervene.

The incident took place in the dressing room area on the first floor of Macy's, the Associated Press reports.

The scuffle and ensuing response by police freaked out nearby shoppers waiting in line for their kids to see Santa.

Witnesses also reported seeing Abdirahaman acting strangely before the attack. Both victims were hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

Abdirahaman, who is now being held on two counts of probable cause first-degree assault, was pictured in his mugshot bruised and bloodied. An investigation is ongoing.

The Mall of America is one of the busiest shopping centers in the country.
