Johnson, 43, will write and direct the first of a new Star Wars trilogy that will bring new characters and worlds not yet explored on screen.

The storied movie studio and theme park operator is scrambling to keep viewers who are abandoning its current top money maker, cable networks.

The new trilogy outside the ongoing Skywalker saga is to be overseen by Rian Johnson, the director of the franchise's upcoming film The Last Jedi, Disney said on Thursday.

While we all love Star Wars and everything that comes with it, it will be interesting to see how fans react to completely new characters having bonded with the Skywalker bloodline and all the familiar aliens we've grown to love.

With the ninth and final installation in the sequel trilogy slated for its own release in 2019, what may be the fourth trilogy will be created and developed by director Rian Johnson. When something as beloved as the galaxy far, far away is involved, there's an enormous amount of pressure on the creative team to make sure it's a worthwhile addition to the series legacy and doesn't spoil anything that's come before.

"Rian will do awesome things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy", Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, said in a statement. There is also now no release date for the new trilogy's first entry.

The most interesting thing about this new trio of films is that Lucasfilm has specifically stated that it will not deal with the Skywalker family. Following that, Solo: A Star Wars Story, which was directed by Ron Howard and stars Alden Ehrenreich, is a stand-alone movie that will tell the story of a young Han Solo and will debut May 25, 2018.
