Shelledy Elementary School Celebrates Our Local Veterans

The morning will be highlighted by a Veterans Day parade at 10 a.m., with students marching through the halls with a guest they invited to the celebration or carrying photos of veterans, or those now serving, who are also family members.

About a hundred students served the veterans during the meal. "So, we appreciate their efforts in honoring the veterans".

"We wanted students to take a more active role as this is part of their leadership training and development", said Lt. Col. Erik Pettyjohn, Air Force (retired), who leads the JROTC program.

Cub Scout from Pack 25 says, "It makes me feel good to let them know that we still care about them because they did fight for our freedom".

"I was in the Army Air Corps. and as far as people calling us 'The Greatest Generation, ' we all just did our job and then came home", Moore said.

Melonas said each year, students and staff create an "honor wall" as a tribute to veterans.

A presentation of colors was given by the Spring Mills High School Jr.

The children showed they had been learning some basic skills by presenting an enthusiastic rendition of the Pledge of Allegiance.

The Su Valley Jr/Sr High School Symphonic Choir sang with the Talkeetna Elementary 3rd-5th grade students in the patriotic song, "Stars and Stripes".

At the program's end, the student body of about 700 waved small USA flags as they joined in singing along to a recording of the song "Proud to be an American".
