While reporting a story in Alabama about supporters of Moore's Senate campaign, a Post reporter heard that Moore allegedly had sought relationships with teenage girls. Other women between the ages of 17 and 18 said they had contact with Moore that involved multiple dates but never went beyond kissing.

A joint fundraising committee benefitting Moore and a handful of Republican Party organs filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission on Friday removing the National Republican Senatorial Committee as one of its beneficiaries.

A number of Republicans have gone on the record saying that, if the allegations are true, it would make Moore unfit to serve and he should step aside.

The revelations triggered a sharp backlash from would-be Republican colleagues on Capitol Hill, who called on Moore to quit the race if the allegations were true.

The NRSC did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Seventy-three percent of Republicans believe that Roy Moore should not drop out of the Alabama Senate race. "You can not tell me there hasn't been an opportunity through the years to make these accusations with as many times as he's (Moore) run (for office) and been in the news". John McCain, an Arizona Republican and former presidential candidate, said the same Thursday.

In addition to the seriousness of the allegations, experts and analysts say that it could cause some serious problems for the GOP's recent tax reform push.

Bannon referenced Moore only briefly during an appearance Thursday night in New Hampshire, attacking The Washington Post as an "apparatus of the Democratic Party".

Moore is running against Democrat Doug Jones in a special election to succeed Jeff Sessions, who left the Senate to become USA attorney general. "Zachariah was extremely old to marry Elizabeth and they became the parents of John the Baptist", Ziegler told the Washington Examiner.

Moore, who has made his moral and religious beliefs the heart of his pitch to voters, prevailed over several Republican opponents in a closely contested primary that saw Trump, Senator McConnell and most Senate Republicans support the incumbent who had been appointed to Sessions' seat, Luther Strange.

A month before Alabama's special election, Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore abruptly faced lurid allegations Thursday of sexual misconduct with minors decades ago - and an immediate backlash from party leaders who demanded he get out of the race if the accusations prove true.

Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon compared the allegations of sexual misconduct with teens against Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore to the bombshell "Access Hollywood" tape that was released during the 2016 election, accusing The Washington Post of targeting both Moore and Donald Trump politically.

Henry, R-Hartselle, who represents a portion of Cullman County, said he suspects the timing of the stories told by five women about Moore's alleged sexual advancements 40 years ago, as told to The Washington Post, are politically motivated as the December 12 special election nears.
