Fewer hospitals in MI have 'A' grades for safety

When The Leapfrog Group published its spring 2017 Hospital Safety Grades in April, Pennsylvania as a whole was slotted as the 34th safest state in the country.

MI ranks 36th in the country for percentage of "A" hospitals - only 19 of the 77 hospitals in the state were given an A. This fall, Leapfrog scored 2,632 hospitals, of which 832 earned As, 662 received Bs and 964 garnered Cs.

"Beaufort Memorial has worked diligently to maintain the highest levels of patient safety in every area of care from hospital-acquired infections to preventing adverse drug reactions", Russell Baxley, Beaufort Memorial President and CEO, said in a press release.

SC ranked 13 among the 50 states, based on the number of hospitals that earned an "A" compared to the total number of hospitals in the state. Although patient safety should be a top priority for all hospitals. The five states with the biggest improvements include Rhode Island, which ranked as the best state overall on the most recent report, was ranked 50th in 2012. "By making the Hospital Safety Grades public, we've galvanized major changes in these states and many communities", said President and CEO of Leapfrog, Leah Binder, in a statement.

Based on that data, Leapfrog measures 27 aspects of patient health and safety. This puts Maryland near the bottom of Leapfrog's bi-annual state rankings analysis, in which states are ranked according to the percentage of "A" hospitals.

In light of this, Twitter retroactively decreased its number of monthly active users by one to two million for each of the last four quarters.

Of the 44 hospitals graded in Maryland, just one (2.3%), Howard County General Hospital in Columbia, earned an "A".

Maryland had previously been exempted from reporting key hospital safety metrics.

WellStar Douglas and WellStar Paulding hospitals remain in the top of the class, ranked with the safest hospitals in Georgia by Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades, a news release stated.

Leapfrog surveys more than 2,600 hospitals across the USA, of which less than one-third received the "A" rating on the report.

Memorial Hospital of South Bend, Lakeland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph, and Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne all received A grades.
