Mersal had a gargantuan day one opening worldwide, and is reported to have earned Rs 22.5 crore from Tamil Nadu theatres alone. While this movie is in news for its GST related dialogues. The actor has been panned for his dialogues in the film that takes a dig at GST and Digital India. Mersal is directed by Atlee Kumar and bankrolled by Sri Thenandal Films.

Narayanasamy on Sunday waded into the row over the Vijay starrer Mersal, saying that the BJP is intolerant towards criticism and attempts to muzzle criticism.

"Let not BJP leaders labour under the mistake that they should always be lauded for anything and everything of the NDA regime even if the decisions of the Centre are injurious to the people", Narayanasamy said. I'm not talking as Vijay's father but as a person who knows the rules and regulations regarding CBFC. "So why target Vijay now?" Veteran actor Kamal Haasan, who's close to Vijay, backed the film on Twitter.
