Wednesday, Oct. 11 - Fun "N" Learning at the North YMCAArea grade schools, home schools and special needs children are invited to attend this outdoor event where they have the opportunity to interact with the Wichita Fire Department and area injury-prevention coalition partners.
They visited for an open house promoting Fire Prevention Week that runs October 8-14.
The department over the next three weeks will visit each elementary school in the city and present children with a packet of information that includes family activities created to promote safety with the theme "Every Second Counts, Plan Two Ways Out", Fire Chief Jason Matthews said.
This year the theme is "Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out".

The NFPA said a practiced home escape plan helps to make sure people don't waste precious time trying to figure out how to get out in the event of a fire. "And that's very significant in that you have to plan ahead to get out safely".

The fire department joined the farmer's market at Aynor Town Park on Saturday, and displayed several of their tools, including a drone, CPR training dummies, and firetrucks. The department gave rides in the fire trucks, let kids touch and feel the equipment, and had pamphlets with fire safety checklists. With so little time to leave a building in a fire, preparation and practice is the best way to remember the plan. "Never go back inside for people or pets. Practice an escape plan before there's a fire so you can get out safely".
CROOKSVILLE, Ohio- This week is fire prevention week across Ohio and many fire departments are educating their citizens on how to be safe. Mitchell says they will also visit both West Elementary and North Star Elementary sharing the fire prevention message with over 900 children.
The big event for this year's Fire Prevention Week though is the Fire Prevention Open House at 5 p.m. on October 10 in front of the Henderson Police Department on Breckenridge Street.
Firefighters will check to see if there is a working smoke detector in the home. "The could be anything from planning an escape plan, checking smoke detectors and even cooking safety stuff in the house".
To make a home escape plan, start by making sure all the doors and windows leading outside open easily. One drill should take place during the day, and another at night.
