Alaska, Hawaii, Oregon and South Dakota are among the states that do not recognize Columbus Day.

"When there's talk about chopping down this statue, which is our gift to this city, we react", State Sen.

However, the SUNY Student Assembly announced that they will be honoring Monday as Indigenous Peoples Day along with Columbus Day.

New York City's latest security concern: a statue of Christopher Columbus.

While honoring "the skilled navigator and man of faith, whose courageous feat brought together continents", in his first Columbus Day proclamation, President Donald Trump made no mention of Native Americans. In Latin America it's thee Dia de la Hispanidad, in Spain it's the Fiesta Nacional, in Belize and Uruguay it is celebrated as a day to respect cultural diversity on Día del Respeto a la Diversidad Cultural, and in the United States it's celebrated as Columbus Day.

This year, the holiday comes amid a national debate over statues dedicated to controversial historical figures triggered by the violence sparked by white supremacist groups in Charlottesville, Virginia in August over the removal of a statue of Confederate Army general Robert E. Lee.

Just this year, 20 cities and one county have adopted some proclamation or ordinance declaring the second Monday in October Indigenous People's Day. "Standing atop the heads of indigenous peoples, located squarely between the Church and Government buildings, located on land stolen from the Onondaga Nation, it is a clear monument to the Doctrine of Discovery, racism and the oppressive structures of colonialism that continue to affect all of us today".

The 22-year-old Kyrgios and Nadal will meet for the fifth time, each winning twice in their careers. He was leading 6-3, 3-0 when his opponent Steve Darcis of Belgium retired with a shoulder problem.

"Our city owes our very founding to the indigenous peoples in Denver", Denver City Councilman Paul Lopez told the Denver Post, shortly after the city adopted the new holiday in 2016. "You honor it by making it no longer invisible".

Austin, Texas, followed suit last week.

"The implementation of Indigenous Peoples' Day shows that these changes can happen, and people can become educated about the truth", Frazer said.

The date Indigenous People's Day is held on varies slightly every year however and, in 2017, America's states and towns face a stark choice as both holidays fall on the same day.

"They want to change holidays".

Columbus was an Italian explorer, and the history books say he discovered the Americas on October 12, 1492.

However, Cliff Matias, cultural director of the Redhawk Native American Arts Council, said it's not about taking anything away from Italian-Americans.
