Petty had multiple platinum and gold records as the lead singer of his band, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and was nominated for 18 Grammys. He was then taken to UCLA Santa Monica Hospital where he was placed on life support.

The singer/songwriter died Monday night, October 2, 2017 at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, according to the Associated Press, a day after he suffered cardiac arrest at his Malibu home. "He died peacefully at 8:40pm PT surrounded by family, his bandmates, and friends".

Reacting to the news of the death of his former Traveling Wilburys bandmate, Bob Dylan told Rolling Stone magazine: "It's shocking, crushing news".

A deft, natural songwriter, Petty could turn a joke into a chart-topping song or capture heartbreak in a single line, while telling stories, crafting anthems, and writing songs about old fashioned rock "n" roll hits.

TMZ had previously reported that Petty was "unconscious, not breathing and in full cardiac arrest", but EMTs were able to get a pulse.

The death of Tom Petty represents an enormous loss to popular music.

"We're all on the backside of our 60s", he said.

Petty had just concluded his 40th anniversary tour on September 25 in Los Angeles with his band, The Heartbreakers, the band he formed in the mid-1970s. I wanted to hold up on posting something because there were a lot of reports he died, then didn't and was clinging on to his life.

Although he made his last top 40 appearance in 2010 with "I Should Have Known It", off of the album "Mojo", the releases and tours never stopped.
