Soul Singer Charles Bradley Dies at 68 After Cancer Battle

Charles Bradley has passed away, an announcement on his various social media channels confirmed.

He had recently returned to live performance after receiving treatment for stomach cancer late past year.

Bradley had cancelled a fall leg of touring earlier this month after it was revealed that his cancer had returned. When he was 8, his family moved to Brooklyn, New York. Critical acclaim for his solo work came later in his life with the release of his 2011 debut album, No Time For Dreaming.

Upon moving back to Brooklyn in 1996, Bradley began moonlighting as a James Brown impersonator under the name Black Velvet. Subsequent releases included 2013's Victim Of Love and Changes which came out a year ago.

Confirming news of Bradley's death, his publicist said: "Mr Bradley was truly grateful for all the love he's received from his fans and we hope his message of love is remembered and carried on". He spent much of his life itinerant, performing at one point in ME - where his band was disbanded due to the Vietnam draft, as he told the Chicago Tribunein 2011.

Speaking to Rolling Stone past year, Bradley said he couldn't envision a future that didn't involve some level of performance.

'When I come back, I'll come back strong, with God's love. "His soulful moans and screams will echo forever on records and in the ears and hearts of those who were fortunate enough to share time with him", Gabriel Roth writes in a statement. Music is how I share my love with the world, and the love that my fans have given back brings me so much joy.
