1 student shot, 1 arrested at central IL high school


Multiple emergency response agencies are on the scene at Mattoon High School for a shooting.

A teacher took control when a male student opened fire in a central IL high school cafeteria on Wednesday morning, police have said.

The victim is reportedly in a stable condition in hospital. Police were clearing the high school room by room at this time.

Mattoon Community Unit School District 2 said just before noon that police responded to an active shooter at Mattoon High School and authorities "have the shooter in custody".

Police were called out to the area for the reports of shots fired around 11:45 a.m, according to the Journal Star.

School officials say as a precaution all buildings are on a soft lockdown.

Mattoon, a town of approximately 18,000 people, is about 180 miles south of Chicago. No other information was immediately available.
