Last year, UW-Madison ranked 10th among publics and 44th overall in a six-way tie. The rankings emphasize outcomes, with graduation and retention rates accounting for 30 percent of the score.

Among all national universities, including private universities, FSU ranked 81st, up from 92nd a year ago, the university said. "This is yet another great tribute to our faculty, staff, alumni and students on the great things happening here at Wesleyan".

The Big Ten Conference public schools were led by Michigan (4), followed by Wisconsin (12), Penn State and Ohio State (tied for 14), Purdue (18), Maryland (22), Rutgers and Minnesota (tied for 25), Iowa (31), Michigan State (33), IN (39) and Nebraska (58).

McRorie said in a release that FSU's initiatives in improving student success is paying off in the national rankings. Among more detailed categories, UCSD was sixth in biomedical engineering and 20th in undergraduate engineering. UC, Miami and Mount St. Joseph also fell out of the rankings for the best colleges for veterans among their peer institutions. The Carnegie classification has served as the basis for the Best Colleges ranking category system since the first rankings were done in 1983. The university's graduation rate is a full 10 percentage points above U.S. News' predicted rate - a differential that ranks 11th in the nation.

In the U.S. News & World Report rankings, the indicators used to capture academic quality of universities are assessment of excellence; graduation and retention rates; faculty resources; student selectivity; financial resources; graduation rate performance, which is the difference between actual and predicted graduation rates; and alumni giving.

Other Oklahoma schools on the list of Best Regional Colleges in the West and their rankings are St. Gregory's University in Shawnee, 19, and Southwestern Christian University in Bethany, 21.

An annual survey of colleges, released Tuesday, lists Princeton University as the best national university for the seventh consecutive year.
