After a week of destruction in the Caribbean, it was clear that Hurricane Irma was one for the books. Storms of Category 3 and above are defined as major hurricanes.

"Based upon the latest observation and analysis, Hurricane Jose could come very close to the Leeward Islands by early Saturday", the center said in a statement.

Hurricane Katia made landfall Friday near the working-class beach resort of Tecolutla in the state of Veracruz on the Mexican Gulf coast, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said. Jose has maximum sustained winds around 90 miles per hour, and forecasters expect it will be upgraded to a major hurricane by Friday.

Hurricane Katia is stationary in the southern Gulf of Mexico, the National Hurricane Center said Thursday morning (Sept. 7).

Katia is now one of three active hurricanes in the Atlantic, as well as Jose and Irma.

The package will also include disaster aid toward the areas of Texas and Louisiana that were left devastated by Hurricane Harvey. Trump's deal ensures the government can borrow money and pay its bills into December in exchange for $8 billion in Harvey aid. .

Katia was downgraded to a tropical storm from a hurricane when it was about 185 kilometres northwest of Veracruz with sustained winds of 65 km/h, the centre said in an advisory.

Hurricane Katia is expected to make landfall in Mexico. It's then predicted to turn northeast, traveling north of the coast of Puerto Rico on Sunday before turning back into the ocean. It rapidly weakened further over land into a tropical storm.

As of 7 a.m., Hurricane Katia was 210 miles east of Tampico, Mexico, and 195 miles northeast of Veracruz, Mexico. Before Irma, the Okeechobee Hurricane (in 1928) and Hurricane David (1979) were the strongest to hit the area with winds of 160 miles per hour.

Due to a large patch of dry air over Louisiana and Texas, Katia will not move northward into Hurricane Harvey-devastated areas, Accuweather reported.
