The late Sinn Féin deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness resigned his post over the DUP's handling of the RHI green energy scheme.

However what we can not and will not do is simply agree to one-sided demands.

Ms O'Neill however repeated her rejection of DUP leader Arlene Foster's call last week for the Northern Executive to be restored based on a commitment that the language issue would be addressed within a specific period of time, and that if it were not resolved the Stormont again would collapse.

"It is the first time that I have ever heard a leader of the DUP commit to legislating for the Irish language". That is not acceptable.

Civil servants have been running Northern Ireland for six months.

"I want the story of Northern Ireland's next 100 years to be of a place and people that thrive within the United Kingdom".

In a statement, she said Foster's comments demonstrated that the DUP has not "listened or acknowledged the reasons for [Martin McGuinness'] resignation".

"The DUP's refusal to afford Irish language speakers in the North rights which speakers of Welsh, Gaelic and Irish enjoy across these islands is shameful and speaks more of our divided past than of the shared future Sinn Féin wishes to see".

Foster said that a series of "one-sided demands" by Sinn Fein had made progress impossible and that they must move to achieve a breakthrough.

The party said restoring government in Northern Ireland under the current circumstances would only lead to another collapse.

Veteran party president Gerry Adams has also said that a language act is crucial to devolution restarting.

"Or do we develop, as the Good Friday Agreement envisages, a society in which everyone's rights are upheld and protected?"
