Police in New York City are searching for a man who they say robbed a towing company last week.

The officer, a woman, was shot in the arm, the spokeswoman said.

Police say after being hit, the officer did not return fire.

The officer was shot in the arm and was taken to Jamaica Hospital, according to reports.

After the initial standoff, the supect's mother was rescued from the house, while the suspect barricaded himself in the building for hours, according to the police.

But when police made entry into the home they found the suspect dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, O'Neill said, adding that a revolver, semi-automatic handgun and ammo were found at his side. "He was even trying to make light of the situation", Mayor Bill de Blasio said as he spoke to reporters at the hospital Thursday night, USA Today reported.

"It's a small-caliber round, so you're not going to be able to see where the impact was, but I did see the blunt force trauma injuries on the officer's chest", O'Neill said, according to New York Daily News.

Officers arrived at the home, where they talked with the mother of the suspected gunman, police said.

"Thank goodness, the officer is gonna be fine", the police commissioner said.

In addition to the weapons, the shooter had a good amount of pills and had recently gotten a new BMW, which has raised questions about how he funded the auto and what he was doing with the medication, police said.

"What could have been just another day, just another call turned into something much worse", the mayor said.

"He had a great attitude". He's a courageous young man. He was then transported to the hospital.
