The app is undergoing maintenance, presumably to get ready for its full launch alongsideSplatoon 2. And from what we're hearing it's quite very bad, and Switch owners aren't happy.

Another reason folks are peeved with the app is that it requires for your phone screen to consistently remain on in order for voice chat to remain connected (via Eurogamer).

The functionality is pretty barebones at this point. Using the SplatNet 2 portal, gamers will be able to invite other players to league battles, Splatfest battles, Salmon runs and private battles.

You can only talk to players when you're in the waiting room of a game or the game itself, and nowhere else, despite the service running through your phone.

You can expect similar features for all the other Switch games that will support Nintendo's iPhone and Android apps. Matthew Hayes of WWG showed off the voice chat solution for Splatton in a tweet. Here's what you need to know.

The Nintendo Switch Online app is now available for download from the iOS App Store and Google Play Store in various regions, although it seems that the servers for the app aren't working for everyone just yet.

What is Nintendo Switch Online? It once again smacked of Nintendo either fundamentally misunderstanding the hows and whys of online play, or of so desperately wanting to shield its younger audience from harm that it wasn't even prepared to offer much-requested online features on its own console.

The Nintendo Switch Online app was originally scheduled to release this Friday, on July 21, but apparently, the Big N chose an early launch compared to the first game that will exploit the app, Splatoon 2.

"If you would like to change devices, you can sign into a new device using your Nintendo Account". The online app will function as a sort of wrapper around various Switch games, some of which may support features others don't, and vice versa.
